“The Phil Lesh Quintet” – with John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Rob Baracco
Tascam DR-2d (internal mics) @ 24/96 > Soundforge (levels, eq, fades, convert to 16/44.1) and also Adobe Audition (remixing) > CDWave (tracking, Flac L6) > TLH (Checksums)
First set supposedly near the rail, under lots of clothes. It needed a LOT of eq to bring up the vocals, which were very fuzzy. They’re still low… sing along, you know the words! Lots of presence in this recording, every string plucked is very clearly discernible. Second set was said to be near the sweet spot. I eq’d from about ninth minute to about the eighteenth, when it was suddenly muffled again, maybe it went into a pocket for a while… the rest is As Is, very full of Phil, just like the room. Enjoy. If I get requests I can make the raw 24/96 files available; let’s see what else surfaces from this great run of shows…

Gregg Allman w/ Willie Nelson, Warren Haynes & Dave Matthews Allman Brothers Band – Farm Aid 9/9/07

XM Comments on ABB/Willie acceptance from Silk Soy
Midnight Rider (Gregg Allman and Willie Nelson)
Melissa (Gregg Allman, Dave Matthews, Warren Haynes)
Trouble No More (Dimples warm up jam)
Revival
Who’s Been Talking
Black Hearted Woman
Statesboro Blues
One Way Out

Gregg Allman’s set started with him on guitar accompanied by Willie Nelson for an arrangement of “Midnight Rider.” Unfortunately, the microphone levels were not the only thing lacking. Nelson’s harmonies were unheard for the first half of the song, and overall I think the song warrants a full band setting to capture the spirit that fans have come to expect. Dave Matthews inclusion on “Melissa” brought a sentimental quality that was well received by the audience.

The Allman Brothers’ set lay second to none at this year’s Farm Aid, compacting their electrical mayhem into a short timeframe. Starting with “Trouble No More” their entire set lie at a summit of creativity. Gregg Allman’s high pitch keyboard hits during the intro to “Black Hearted Woman” gelled with the ride cymbal, showing Allman can blend himself with ease. What is so recognizable about the Allman Brothers is their affinity for in-your-face unison guitar riffs ripe with potential. These prominent guitar parts become entangled and eventually upgrade to vast possibilities with the monster rhythm section behind them. And you better believe this band knows how to work them out. Accented with cymbal crashes, Trucks’ guitar solo on “Black Hearted Woman” drove into changing terrains, each more climatic than the last. You could hear ideas develop into recognizable bits like “My Favorite Things.” Like John Coltrane, Trucks can find other songs in his own styling. Warren Haynes’ solo was pure brilliance on “Whose Been Talking,” where he played through the changes with a tremolo that was met by Butch Trucks’ drumming note for note. This band is tight. Every nuance is layered and shared. The Allman Brothers’ set also included “Statesboro Blues” and “Revival,” a carnival for the ears.

==========================================================

UPDATE:
Email received by Dan Henry on Mon, October 11, 2004 12:01 am:

Hey man,
My name is Brian Hayes and I wanted to let you know the deal
with the Rich Hippies files you got there. My dad played bass
for them. He and Warren got the band together back in the
summer of 1985 when they lived together in Antioch, TN, a
small county in Nashville. I posted a pic of the band at
http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/index.php?module=My_eGallery&do=showpic&pid=3567&orderby=dateD .
The band’s name was “Rich Hippies”, not Warren Haynes and
the Rich Hippies. >From left to right in the pic, they are:
Dennis Robbins – Slide guitar and rhythm guitar, backing vocals,
Mickey Hayes (my dad) – Bass Guitar and backing vocals,
Mark Dever – Drums, Warren Haynes – Lead guitar, and sitting
on my dad’s anvil briefcase, Tommy Irwin – Steel Guitar. Warren
does not play slide on any of these recordings; it is Dennis
that you hear. This was a project that my dad and Warren did
as a lark after they and everyone else left The David Allan Coe Band,
and also to fill time in between gigs so they could make some
money around town. They only played a few shows here and there
before getting better paying jobs on the road. This was recorded
in the kitchen of my Dad and Warren’s house in Antioch, Tennessee
with 2 Shure 58 mics, one on a stand about ten feet from the
band and one on the floor on a pillow between the kick drum and
bass amp. The vocals where recorded later in the bathroom and
the “audience” you here is from an old live record they had,
that they spliced in the crowd sounds from. I can’t remember
the LP used. The song listed as track 2 is not “Wild Fire”, but
is called “Bad News”. There are not any other recordings, except
for a possible show done in Charlotte, NC at a club that used
to be called Harley Hog and The Rockers, don’t know if it is
still there. By the way, my dad was the person who found Warren
in Asheville, and got him his job with David Allan Coe. They
lived together until Warren was in about his second year with
the ABB, and moved to New York. I am posting this to the ABB
board too, so they know the deal. My dad and I where wondering
where did you get these from? The only copies known were the ones
he and I had, and Warren, Tommy, Dennis, and Mark. A few demos
might have been sent out to some clubs, but not many. Just
wondering. Well, just wanted to let you know, so you can update
the info on your site. Thanks.

Brian Hayes

This was recorded from two radio broadcasts from the Fur Peace Ranch in Pomeroy, Oh.

this show was uploaded as 2 long tracks with no text file. show was great and sound quality
is super nice, so i decided to track it up, do a text file etc…. tracked out the radio announcements,
and slow happy boys was on both broadcasts, so i removed it from disc 1 so all the “guests”
would be on the one disc. due to the overlap, i was able to rejoin the 2 recordings
after removing Jorma’s intro on disc 2 so the 2 discs are now seamless. not seamless where
I edited out the radio annoncements, nothing I could do there. this may be prefm, recoreded as
it aired, sound is super clean.
thanks to samntuck for seeding this and mmwarchives for source/setlist help.

enjoy!
