“The Phil Lesh Quintet” – with John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Rob Baracco

Notes: Tascam DR-2d (internal mics) @ 24/96 > Soundforge (levels, fades, convert to 16/44.1) > CDWave (Tracking, Flac L6) > TLH (Checksums)

This was recorded in The Philzone, right by the Sweet Spot. It’s a little chatty there, but very enthusiastic. For sticklers, please note that I set the 40Hz bass roll-off on the Tascam, after hearing Phil dominate my recording from the night before. The midrange is much fuller, but the low bass is a little mushy… but it sounded grate in The Zone, enjoy. I particularly loved hearing the audience joining the band for the end of Bid You Goodnight. Bet your soundboard can’t do THAT…

First set supposedly near the rail, under lots of clothes. It needed a LOT of eq to bring up the vocals, which were very fuzzy. They’re still low… sing along, you know the words! Lots of presence in this recording, every string plucked is very clearly discernible. Second set was said to be near the sweet spot. I eq’d from about ninth minute to about the eighteenth, when it was suddenly muffled again, maybe it went into a pocket for a while… the rest is As Is, very full of Phil, just like the room. Enjoy. If I get requests I can make the raw 24/96 files available; let’s see what else surfaces from this great run of shows…

2-Midnight Rider>Franklin’s Tower>Blue Sky
3-St.Stephen>Mountain Jam
4-Hoochie Coochie Man
5-Ramblin’ Man (w/ Don Johnson)
6-Nobody Left To Run With
7-Whippin’ Post(Woody on 18 string custom bass,very rare!)

This is a cd from Allan Woody’s personal collection, recorded by his personal recording engineer. This was mixed on the fly thru headphones from a mix of sbd signals(which were buggy) and a mic array at the soundboard. The mics were 2 AKG414TLII(3′between), 2 Tascam PE-120(x>y) and 1 NAK 300 shotgun(dead ctr), 15′up. Recorded direct to HDD thru custom 20bit/48k a/d converter. CD’s were burned and distributed to the band that night. Don Johnson(the actor) sat in for a song and the Hollywood crew was in attendance. It had to fit on 1 cd, with little time for tweaks. This is the result. It ain’t perfect, but it sho’ ’nuff better’n grits!!
